Final Evaluation

Evaluation for unit Locating  This unit has encouraged me to work out of my comfort zone and under pressure. I am amazed by the number of projects I have done during this unit which includes the following; Engineering embroidery Fashion | Form | Fabrication Manchester' Multi-Language Mushaira! CP2 It was challenging for me to work for 4 projects all at the same time, I think the key to handling such workload for me was organising the time.  During the engineering embroidery, I had decided to work in a completely different way to create 3-dimensional sample pieces instead of making plain fabric samples. I have realised from my last unit 'intention' that I don't enjoy creating traditional patterns. Therefore, in this unit, my aim was to create 2D and 3D samples. Also, I have learned in the 'engineering embroidery' that I like creating movements of 3D pieces along with the fabric. I think I have really played around with dif...

Manchester’s Multi-Language Mushaira!

Image
Mushaira Project   by Alice Kettle and Emma Martin  This is the project, which I have done during the FFF. I have done this project in collaboration with Alice Kettle. I have spoken to her about the project, she told us about the school kids and the crew who are the Creative Crew at Stanley Grove Primary Academy.  They are working with Manchester Library Service, Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Manchester, four poets, two artists, the Whitworth Art Gallery, schools across Manchester.  It was a pleasure working with Alice Kettle, she has given the complete freedom to choose our own theme for the tent decoration.  At the beginning of this project, I went to the Abakhan. There I have found some kids fabrics to get some inspiration, then I have asked my 9-year-old sister what she would like to see in the tent. She gave me some ideas about having something fluffy, lightning and bright colours in the tent.  ...

Fashion | Foam | Fabrication 'Exhibition'

Image
Exhibition  For the final exhibition, I was not able to print any actual 3D printed piece , but I have tried to visualise my 3D pieces on the 360 fusion as shown below; visualisation of 3D design on CAD I was not happy with this visualisation because it was not exactly showing the idea of my character’s characteristics, which was based on the weather winter. Therefore, my tutor suggested me to exhibit crystal cones with resin and actual ice on the exhibition.   However, I have tried to make resin and ice cones by trapping the materials like threads to show the winter colour theme as shown below; Temporary | Frozen  Inspired by the White witch from the movie ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’, I have explored the evilness, selfishness, an emotionless and heartless character of the witch. By experimenting with crystal shapes which are pointy and dangerous but beautiful at the same time, I explored the duality of good versus evil.  Also, the ...

Fashion | Form | Fabrication 'Collar making'

Image
Traditional Collar Making During this unit, I have also tried to make a traditional collar by unpinning the old shirt collar into the new one. I had open all the stitches of a collar of an old shirt, then I have made drawings and took photographs to see how it has been stitched and to get instructions into my visual designs. The process of my collar making has been shown below; I really love the formation of the collar from observational drawings to the actual 3D piece, I think I will use these for the future as well. Also, with the help of these notes, I might make couture and dramatical collars for this unit as well.

Magnetic workshop

Image
Today, I have attended a talk of Elnaz Yazdani. She is a contemporary jewellery maker and an embroidery teacher, who has done an internship with 'Iris Van Herpen'. She has talked to us about the background of some fashion designed pieces by 'Iris Van Herpen'. It was really interesting to know about the facts that a designer doesn't only work within his/her field but also works with other creative people - all together to make an interesting outcome of mixed media textiles with technology. After the talk, I had the chance to attend the 'magnetic workshop' with Elnaz Yazdani. I have created some sample pieces with the magnet, iron powder and rubber solution to give the flexible feel to the piece as shown below: Trapping materials with one-another Gravity pull by magnetism  On the ceramic scrap piece On the jersey fabric. I really love the way this technique has worked. The sharpness and the natural movement by magnetism are really nice ...

Engineering Embroidery 'Development and Sampling'

Image
Development and Sampling This week, I have used the scrap material and started to wrap different types of threads over different materials to experiment with different materials. I was really interested in making 3D structures rather than making flat fabric samples. I wanted to create textures but with the 3D effect. Therefore I have experimented with these various ways to develop into my sample making (shown below): Sample piece inspired by Laura Bell Sample piece inspired by my thread wrapping around scrap materials Sample piece inspired by my thread wrapping samples.

Engineering Embroidery 'Development'

Development This week I have started collecting scrap bits from the metal, laser cutting and ceramic workshops.  I have found different materials, through which I could experiment with my sample making. Also, I had the one to one tutorial this week,  had the feedback about developing, from one of m sample piece as shown in the image down below: Marble wrapping sample.  It was really interested to hold the heavyweight of marbles onto the light weighted organza fabric. I think if I develop it furthermore, I can make holes onto a fabric piece and try to pop-up the marbles from the holes to describe the fact of unhealthy fat growing on the skin.
