Manchester’s Multi-Language Mushaira!
Mushaira Project
by Alice Kettle and Emma Martin
This is the project, which I have done during the FFF. I have done this project in collaboration with Alice Kettle. I have spoken to her about the project, she told us about the school kids and the crew who are the Creative Crew at Stanley Grove Primary Academy. They are working with Manchester Library Service, Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Manchester, four poets, two artists, the Whitworth Art Gallery, schools across Manchester.
It was a pleasure working with Alice Kettle, she has given the complete freedom to choose our own theme for the tent decoration.
At the beginning of this project, I went to the Abakhan. There I have found some kids fabrics to get some inspiration, then I have asked my 9-year-old sister what she would like to see in the tent. She gave me some ideas about having something fluffy, lightning and bright colours in the tent.
Therefore, I decided to work with bright colours and in a tight budget of £30 pounds.
However, I thought I will buy the fluffy fabric to make 2 cushions, but the fabric was quite expensive, therefore I thought, I can make at least one fluffy cushion and the other one could be made by collecting the scrap fabrics and threads as shown below;

However, I have made the red cushion by using the hair pinning technique with scrap fabrics and threads, but the backing fabric is from the A4 more shop in the university.
I am quite happy with the cushions because I have never made any cushion, therefore they are self-taught and looks quite decent to sell in the shop.
Also, to do something less expensive at the back of the cushion I have used the eyelets instead of using a zip as shown below;
I have also done quilting on the seating cushions to make the sitting for kids comfortable. (shown below)
This is the first time, I have done quilting by using the industrial machine and I am quite amazed by the outcome. The only thing, which I don't like about using the quilting machine that it takes a lot of time to set before stitching.
I might use this machine again by making my own designs on the 'ethos' software to give my samples a personal touch.
I was not happy with the exterior of the tent, which I have decorated by using spray paints and buttons, but I think the interior of the tent is good compared to the exterior.
The final look of the tent has been shown below;
