Fashion | Form | Fabrication 'Collar making'

Image
Traditional Collar Making During this unit, I have also tried to make a traditional collar by unpinning the old shirt collar into the new one. I had open all the stitches of a collar of an old shirt, then I have made drawings and took photographs to see how it has been stitched and to get instructions into my visual designs. The process of my collar making has been shown below; I really love the formation of the collar from observational drawings to the actual 3D piece, I think I will use these for the future as well. Also, with the help of these notes, I might make couture and dramatical collars for this unit as well.

Magnetic workshop

Image
Today, I have attended a talk of Elnaz Yazdani. She is a contemporary jewellery maker and an embroidery teacher, who has done an internship with 'Iris Van Herpen'. She has talked to us about the background of some fashion designed pieces by 'Iris Van Herpen'. It was really interesting to know about the facts that a designer doesn't only work within his/her field but also works with other creative people - all together to make an interesting outcome of mixed media textiles with technology. After the talk, I had the chance to attend the 'magnetic workshop' with Elnaz Yazdani. I have created some sample pieces with the magnet, iron powder and rubber solution to give the flexible feel to the piece as shown below: Trapping materials with one-another Gravity pull by magnetism  On the ceramic scrap piece On the jersey fabric. I really love the way this technique has worked. The sharpness and the natural movement by magnetism are really nice ...

Engineering Embroidery 'Development and Sampling'

Image
Development and Sampling This week, I have used the scrap material and started to wrap different types of threads over different materials to experiment with different materials. I was really interested in making 3D structures rather than making flat fabric samples. I wanted to create textures but with the 3D effect. Therefore I have experimented with these various ways to develop into my sample making (shown below): Sample piece inspired by Laura Bell Sample piece inspired by my thread wrapping around scrap materials Sample piece inspired by my thread wrapping samples.

Engineering Embroidery 'Development'

Development This week I have started collecting scrap bits from the metal, laser cutting and ceramic workshops.  I have found different materials, through which I could experiment with my sample making. Also, I had the one to one tutorial this week,  had the feedback about developing, from one of m sample piece as shown in the image down below: Marble wrapping sample.  It was really interested to hold the heavyweight of marbles onto the light weighted organza fabric. I think if I develop it furthermore, I can make holes onto a fabric piece and try to pop-up the marbles from the holes to describe the fact of unhealthy fat growing on the skin.

Fashion | Form | Fabrication 'Visualisation'

Image
Visualisation  I have visualised my work by drawing my character into various sizes on varieties of papers and by designing a range of collar designs by looking into my research.  I was finding it a bit hard to visualise the collar styles from my memory into hand making designs, therefore with the help of my hand made drawings and my primary photos, I started to make collages on photoshop to show the couture style collars on my character as shown below;  Visualisation   Visualisation  Visualisation

Fashion | Form | Fabrication 'Research and Learning agreement'

Image
Learning agreement I am doing the Fashion | Form | Fabrication project. In this project, I will be looking into a character called ‘The white witch’ from the movie Narnia played by Tilda Swinton (shown below). The white witch is the character, which represents a negative, dramatic and a fictional personality. The white witch from the movie 'the chronicles of Narnia' The idea for this project is to make a couture collar according to my character’s characteristics by showing the evilness, stiffness and emotionless character of ‘the white witch’. For this, I am making my project based on the weather winter because the white witch only survives in winter and likes to hurt people. She does not like summer because according to her, summer gives happiness to other people and harms her coldness. In conclusion, to this, I might be looking into the formation of ice as well and shows the melting process of the ice. However, my concept is to create my own material to...

Engineering Embroidery 'Development and research'

Dimorphous 2009 by Karen Margolis Development and research During the Christmas holidays, I have found an artist called 'Karen Margolis', who is a paper artist inspired by the molecular structure and its theory. I was inspired by his colour theme and the way he merges science with his imagination. As throughout the project I was fascinated with the circular structure of human fat cells(inspired by Steve Gschmeissner microscopic photography), therefore I was interested in the circular structure of Karen Margolis work as shown in the image at the right. Then by getting inspiration from their work, I have started to create my drawings by own style with bubbles and soldering iron as shown down below:  Mark-making drawing by me. I think this technique didn't really work because the soap of the bubbles was making the merged texture on the circular structure of these drawings. therefore for the next time, I might use a pen or other paintin...
