Theme: Beauty of fat cellsFor this project, I have been given the brief of 'engineering embroidery'. In this project, I wanted to construct something which creates the expression of touch and sense - something that might have texture and a bit of 3D touch.
After visiting Manchester Gallery, design centre and Manchester - I didn't find something new or attracting which I really I wanted to work on. Therefore I have started to look around books and websites. Then I started to look into scientific microscopic photography of cells. I have looked into blood cells, cancer cells, white blood cells and fat cells. By looking into the microscopic images, I have found a microscopic photographer called Steve Gschmeissner, who uses a scanning electron microscope (SEM) for microscopic images. I was inspired by his microscopic photos of fat cells as shown below:

As I like to create an expanding texture which creates a natural pattern onto the surface. I thought of using expanding forms under the holes of different materials. I have used a soldering iron to make marks on a piece of cartridge paper by getting inspired by these photographs as shown below:
Mark-making drawing by using a soldering iron.
I really like the way this mark-making technique has worked. the texture which is showing at the sides of the burning wholes looks like something is expanding around the empty holes. The grid lines around the holes don't really show the fibres on the fat cells, therefore I thought of making some organic fibre lines over it, but not in a geomaterial way.
I like things to expand by themselves to create their own natural pattern according to the material's materiality. Therefore next, my aim was to s Therefore I decided to use the 'expanding form' under these holes and then let the form comes out naturally to create a sense of expansion of fat cells in the body. An example of this is shown down below:

Expanded foam experiment.
In this sample piece, I really liked the way I have tried to layer up two different samples to see the variety of perspectives.
Also, this week I have given a task to create a lot of samples by experimenting with different materials for 3-4 hours. I really enjoyed the way I have created samples on the spot. I went to different workshops in the uni and found some materials from the scrap bins to get ideas immediately. while looking for the materials, my aim was to find something circular to represent my theme 'beauty of fat cells'. I was quite happy with my outcome and find out that I am pretty good at having ideas immediately to create something new and unique.
